Getting to Matera

By Plane

The nearest airport to Matera is Bari-Palese airport (Aeroporto Karol Wojtyła), which is 55 kilometers away and serves the Italian cities Milan, Rome, Verona, Turin, Venice, Bergamo, Alghero, Trieste, Pisa and Bologna, as well as international destinations, such as London (Stansted and Gatwick), Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, Cologne, Bucharest, Tirana, Stuttgart and Munich. Bari-Palese Airport operates flights by Alitalia, British Airways, Lufthansa, MyAir, Ryanair, Hapag Lloyd, AirOne and Club Air.

Alternative airports are Brindisi-Casale (140 km) and Naples (250 km).

A shuttle service runs between Matera and Bari Airport. Timetables are available online and booking is recommended.

By train

Currently, to go to Matera it is convenient to arrive in Ferrandina – Scalo Matera, which is served by Trenitalia high speed trains and from there use the bus service to Matera.

Alternatively, you can arrive to Salerno and then take Freccialink to Matera directly. Freccialink is a shuttle service operating from these stations only, and can be accessed only through Trenitalia ticket office in combination with the train ticket. 

There is also a separate train connection served by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane that connects directly Bari and Matera.

By car

From the Mediterranean coast:

Take the Salerno-Reggio Calabria Autostrada followings indications for Potenza and Metaponto on the SS 407 Basentana road, then head towards Matera after the Ferrandina Scalo FS exit.

From the Adriatic coast:

Take A14 Bologna-Taranto Autostrada and exit Bari Nord. Continue to the industrial zone and exit in Modugno towards Altamura-Matera, following the SS 96 then the SS 99 roads.

From the south of Italy (Calabria and Sicily):

Take the Reggio Calabria-Salerno Autostrada to the Sibari exit, then the SS 106 Jonica road for Taranto. The Matera exit is near Metaponto.

By sea

The Port of Bari is the closest to Matera and has ferry connections for:

  • Dubrovnik (Croatia)
  • Durazzo (Albania)
  • Igoumenitsa (Greece)
  • Patras (Greece)
  • Sami (Kefalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece)

It is also possible to use the Port of Brindisi that is connected to:

  • Saranda (Albania).
